Steps to take before attempting to unlock your phone
Unlocking an AT&T customer’s phone is not something that can be done by just anybody. First, you’ll need to ensure that you meet all of the prerequisite conditions.
You need to finish making payments on your phone (the physical device itself) if you have been doing so as part of a monthly plan up to this point.
Check to see that you have no outstanding debt with ATT. Because of this, it is impossible for your account to have a balance that is overdue.
You will not be able to unlock the device if it has ever been reported as missing, stolen, or “engaged in fraud.”
Customers serving in the armed forces are the only ones who are exempt from these regulations. You are eligible to unlock your phone before the end of your payment plan if you are presently serving in the military and can show documentation proving that you have experienced a temporary or permanent change of station (TCS or PCS). ATT must be contacted directly by calling their customer service number at (800) 331-0500, or you may chat with them online.
Instructions on how to unlock your device from ATT
1. Navigate to the online unlocking portal that ATT provides and pick the Unlock your device option.

2. When prompted to confirm that you are a client of AT&T, click “Yes” and then enter your phone number.

ATT should get back to you on the status of your request within two business days and let you know whether it was granted or denied. If you were denied service, it most likely indicates that you have an outstanding balance with ATT.
